Service overview
What stump grinding involves
Stump grinding uses a specialist machine with a rotating cutting wheel to grind a tree stump into chippings below ground level. It is quicker and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, and leaves a hole that can be backfilled with soil and replanted, turfed or prepared for paving. Rosewood Tree Care Ltd grinds stumps for homes across Hatfield and Hertfordshire, either after removing a tree or for stumps left from earlier work.
Who it’s for
Stump grinding is for homeowners with old stumps in lawns, borders, patios or driveways; people planning landscaping, extensions or new fencing; and anyone who has had a tree removed and wants the area completely clear.
When you need it
Consider grinding when a stump is a trip hazard, gets in the way of mowing, is sprouting new shoots, has fungus growing on it, or sits where you want to plant, lay turf, build a shed or extend a patio.

If it’s left too long
What happens when the work waits
A stump left in the ground doesn’t just sit there. It can cause problems for years.
Regrowth
Many species send up new shoots from the stump and roots, so the tree you removed keeps trying to come back.
Trip hazard and obstruction
Stumps catch feet, mowers and strimmers, and stop you using that part of the garden properly.
Decay and fungi
As stumps rot, fungi can appear and decaying wood can attract insects, looking unsightly in the garden.
Common mistakes we see
- Trying to dig out a large stump by hand.
- Burning a stump, which is slow, smoky and risky near fences.
- Hiring a grinder without knowing where underground services run.
- Leaving grindings in a hole and laying turf straight on top.
- Grinding too shallow for the planned planting or paving.
- Leaving a stump to rot for years, waiting for it to disappear.
Our process
How the job runs, step by step
- 01
Get in touch
Tell us how many stumps there are, their approximate size and where they are in the garden.
- 02
Check access
We check access through gates and around the stump, and ask about any known underground services.
- 03
Free quotation
You receive a free quotation for the agreed grinding, including removal of green waste from the work.
- 04
Grind the stump
The stump is ground below ground level to the depth agreed for the job; any additional root work needs discussion.
- 05
Clear the site
All green waste from the agreed work is removed. Further backfilling, settling or ground preparation may be needed before the space is used.
The result
What you get from the work
Usable ground
The agreed stump is ground below the surface. The space can then be prepared for its intended use; grinding alone does not make a paving or planting base.
Stump removed
Grinding removes the agreed stump material. Some species may still send up shoots from remaining roots, so regrowth cannot be ruled out.
Safer garden
Trip hazards and mower obstructions disappear.
Minimal disruption
Grinding is much quicker and less destructive than digging out a stump and its roots.
A tidier look
The garden looks finished rather than marked by an old tree.
Waste removed
As a licensed waste carrier we remove all green waste from the agreed work on completion.
In detail
How stump grinding works
Every stump is different. Its size, the species, the ground and what you want to do with the space afterwards all affect the job.
Grinding depth
Stumps are ground below the surface. If you plan to plant a new tree or lay paving in the same spot, let us know, and discuss the required depth, limitations and any additional root work when requesting a quotation.
Access
Stump grinders come in different sizes. Gate widths, steps and slopes matter, so tell us about access when you get in touch.
Surface roots
Discuss any surface roots and the intended use of the area when requesting a quotation. Wider root work is not automatically available or included with stump grinding.
Grindings
Grinding produces a mound of wood chips and soil. All green waste from the agreed work is removed on completion; backfilling and further soil preparation should be discussed separately. Fresh grindings are not ideal as a base for new turf without added soil.
Underground services
Gas, water, electric and drainage lines can run near stumps. Tell us anything you know about services in the area before work starts.
After tree removal
If we are felling a tree for you, ask whether stump grinding can be included in the quotation and whether the work can be scheduled together. Timing depends on the job and access.
What affects the cost of stump grinding
Every quotation is free and based on your job. These are the main factors that shape the price.
Access to the work
Wide side access, a clear driveway or an open front garden makes it quicker to move equipment and waste. Narrow passages, steps, steep slopes, glasshouses or tight back gardens mean more time carrying material by hand, and that time is reflected in the quotation. Let us know about access when you first get in touch so the quote is accurate.
Stump diameter
Larger stumps take considerably longer to grind than small ones, as the cutting wheel must work across the full width and depth of the wood.
Number of stumps
Several stumps in one garden are usually more cost-effective to grind in one visit than individually.
Species and condition
Some woods are much harder to grind than others. Old, partly decayed stumps can be quicker, while dense hardwoods take longer.
Removal of grindings
Grinding produces a large mound of chips and soil. Removing it from site is part of the clearance and is included in the quotation for the agreed work.
Depth and roots
Discuss the intended use of the space, the agreed grinding depth and any surface roots when requesting a quotation. Additional root work is not automatically included or suitable.
Stump Grinding across Hertfordshire
Stumps from trees removed years ago are often still solid, particularly hardwoods such as oak. Waiting for one to rot away naturally can take many years, during which time it stays in the way and may produce fungi or new shoots. The scope and likely number of visits depend on the stump, access and agreed grinding depth. Whether the stump is from a tree we have just felled or one that has sat in the garden for a long time, the method is the same, and you will receive a free quotation before any work is booked. Georgie is NPTC / City & Guilds qualified. Rosewood holds £2 million public liability insurance.
Stump grinding is also a good point to rethink the space. Once the hole has been backfilled with good topsoil and allowed to settle, it can be seeded or turfed to blend into the lawn, planted with shrubs or used as the base for a path or patio. If you would like a new tree in the same area, plant it slightly to one side of the old stump.
Photographs of the stump and the route from your gate or driveway help us give you a free quotation based on the agreed scope and bring the right size of machine.
Many Hertfordshire gardens have stumps left from earlier removals of leylandii, sycamore or ornamental trees. Grinding them out is often the first step in a garden redesign, a new lawn or an extension.
Clay soils across parts of the county can be heavy and wet in winter, so access with machinery may be easier in drier conditions. We will advise if timing makes a difference to your job.
Before grinding, it helps if you can tell us about drains, cables or pipes you know of near the stump.
