Service overview

What tree felling involves

Tree felling is the controlled removal of a whole tree. In open space a tree may be felled in one piece, but in most gardens it is taken down in sections, from the top downwards, with precautions intended to reduce the risk to nearby houses, fences, sheds and plants. Rosewood Tree Care Ltd removes trees for homeowners in Hatfield and across Hertfordshire, with a free quotation before work and all green waste removed afterwards. If you want the ground fully cleared, we can also grind the stump.

Who it’s for

Tree removal suits homeowners with a tree that is dead, dying, structurally unsound or simply in the wrong place: too close to the house, blocking all the light, lifting a patio or driveway, or preventing a garden redesign or extension. It also suits people who have bought a home with self-seeded trees that have grown far larger than intended.

When you need it

Removal is worth considering when a tree has significant decay, fungus at the base, large dead sections, a dangerous lean, or roots damaging hard surfaces. It may also be the right answer when a reduction would leave a tree misshapen, or when repeated pruning has become more expensive than replacement. We will tell you if we think a tree can sensibly be kept.

If it’s left too long

What happens when the work waits

A tree that needs to come out rarely improves with time. Dead and decaying wood gets weaker, and roots keep growing.

Unplanned failure

Dead and decaying trees become brittle. They can drop large limbs or fail completely in wind, often across gardens, fences or neighbouring property.

Root damage

Roots can lift patios, paths and driveways and interfere with drains. The longer a problem tree stays, the more extensive that damage tends to become.

Harder removal later

As a tree grows and weakens, it becomes harder and more time-consuming to dismantle safely, especially close to buildings.

Common mistakes we see

  • Felling a garden tree in one go without room for it to fall.
  • Removing a protected tree without notifying the council.
  • Leaving a tall stump that later sprouts or decays.
  • Underestimating the volume of waste a single tree produces.
  • Cutting near fences and walls without lowering sections on ropes.
  • Choosing a cheap quote without asking about insurance and waste disposal.

Our process

How the job runs, step by step

  1. 01

    Tell us about the tree

Call or email with its size, location and why you would like it removed. Photographs are helpful.

  2. 02

    Plan the removal

We look at the tree, access and what surrounds it, and decide whether to fell or dismantle in sections.

  3. 03

    Free quotation

You receive a clear quotation, including stump grinding if you want it, before you commit.

  4. 04

    Controlled removal

The tree is taken down safely, with sections lowered where needed to protect property and planting.

  5. 05

    Full clearance

Timber, branches and debris are removed from site, leaving the area tidy and ready to use.

The result

What you get from the work

Hazard removed

A dead or unstable tree no longer threatens your home, garden or neighbours.

Space reclaimed

Removing an oversized tree opens up light and room for lawns, planting, patios or building work.

Protected surroundings

Sectional dismantling allows removal in smaller sections, with precautions intended to protect surrounding property. The method depends on the tree and access.

Stump options

Choose to have the stump ground out so the ground can be replanted, turfed or paved.

Everything taken away

As a licensed waste carrier, we remove all green waste once the job is complete.

Properly insured

Rosewood holds £2m public liability insurance. Georgie is NPTC / City & Guilds qualified and works with the team.

In detail

How trees are removed safely

No two removals are the same. Species, height, lean, condition and the space around the tree all shape the method. These are the main approaches we use for residential tree removal in Hertfordshire.

Straight felling

Where there is a clear, open area at least as long as the tree is tall, it can be felled in one piece using a directional notch and back cut. This is quicker but only suitable in larger gardens and open ground.

Sectional dismantling

Most garden trees are removed piece by piece. A climber removes the branches, then the trunk is cut in manageable sections from the top. Heavier pieces are lowered on ropes to avoid damage below.

Dead and diseased trees

Dead wood behaves differently and can be brittle and unpredictable, so the method is adjusted accordingly. Trees affected by decay or disease are assessed carefully before anyone climbs them.

Conifers and hedging trees

Overgrown conifers, including leylandii planted as screens, are a common removal. They produce large volumes of foliage, which we chip and remove from site.

Stump grinding

After felling, the stump can be left low, or ground out below ground level with a stump grinder. Grinding prevents regrowth on many species and clears the way for replanting or landscaping.

Permissions to check

Before removing a tree, check whether it is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, as your local council will usually need to be notified or give consent. Planning conditions on newer homes can also protect trees.

What affects the cost of tree felling

Every quotation is free and based on your job. These are the main factors that shape the price.

Access to the work

Wide side access, a clear driveway or an open front garden makes it quicker to move equipment and waste. Narrow passages, steps, steep slopes, glasshouses or tight back gardens mean more time carrying material by hand, and that time is reflected in the quotation. Let us know about access when you first get in touch so the quote is accurate.

Volume of green waste

Every job ends with the green waste removed from your property. More branches, foliage and timber means more chipping, loading and disposal. Conifers and evergreen hedges produce far more volume than people expect, so this is one of the bigger variables in any quotation.

Height, spread and condition

Taller trees and wider crowns take longer to dismantle. Dead or decayed trees may need extra care and a different method, which can add time.

Proximity to buildings and services

Trees close to houses, conservatories, fences and overhead cables are taken down in smaller sections and lowered on ropes. These precautions aim to reduce risks to property but can take longer than straight felling in open ground.

Stump grinding

Grinding the stump out below ground is optional and priced as part of the quotation if you want it. It is often worthwhile if you plan to replant, lay turf or pave over the area.

Tree Felling across Hertfordshire

Once a tree has gone, think about what comes next. You may choose to replace a large, problematic tree with a smaller species better suited to the space, such as a field maple, rowan or ornamental cherry, planted well away from the house. Others prefer to open up the garden entirely. Ask whether stump grinding can be scheduled with removal. Further ground preparation may be needed for the intended use.

In Hertfordshire, common removals include overgrown leylandii screens, self-seeded sycamore and ash close to houses, and ornamental trees that have outgrown smaller modern gardens. Many towns, including St Albans, Hertford and Harpenden, have conservation areas where notice is usually needed before felling.
